I had a .22 Webley air pistol. If you packed phosphorus from matches in the open end of the pellet it, left a spiral trail of smoke behind it when fired. If you fired the pellet with the open end facing front, no smoke, but made a lovely loud bang upon contact with a solid target such as a wooden gate, or a
metal dustbin.
