That sounds about right to be honest. This hobby is for either the obsessive or the easily impressed... hardly anything ever works out of the box. Don't get me wrong, I fully sympathise and wish it was not the way that it is, but I'm not at all surprised.
Really hope your gear is swiftly fixed and you're able to spend less time problem solving and more time imaging!
As for the image; wonderfully sharp detail, great composition and overall contrast... I'm less sure about the colour... looks a bit too red to me.
