Chris, the best wire for this kind of mods is enameled copper wire used for transformers. It comes in wide range of diameters, you will need 0.2 mm or so.
To remove the insulation, you just have to apply the hot soldering iron to burn it on the edges, Jaycar and Dick Smith have that wire in stock (on small reels) but you can also try to find old faulty transformer
To do this kind of mods I highly recommend you to use stereo microscope....
