Keep on with those 7x50s, I used some for years before getting my scope and as a result I am pretty good at finding my way around the sky, understand the moon phases, the movement of the Jovian moons, the movement of planets along the ecleptic and the movement of the constellations throughout the year.
Try setting yourself up in a good reclining arm chair for observing then your views will be even better.
