These waves were a regular feature of the OLD (B&W) TV series "Sea Hunt" . Lloyd Bridges used to get caught in one every second episode. They exhibit the strange phenomena that while Lloyd would be writhing about as he was tossed about objects in the background were stationary.
I can't believe that I used to find this stuff believable, but I was very young.
