Annoyance * 100! - just wrote a huge how to response, but I chose one of two duplicate threads to add this too, unfortunately an admin zapped this parent duplicate thread after I had spent 20 minutes given you a detailed reply - hence my original post was orphaned and thereby lost - to my huge annoyance - once I pressed the save button - it gave a contact the administrator message cause something had gone wrong! Guessed admin zapped the duplicate I was posting too just before I entered the save button - it can happen! So a very quick re-summation follows...

NB - Admins - you probably need an agreed policy of which duplicate to zap (either the earliest one or the least read one) before zapping a random duplicate and potentially inconvenciencing someone the way I was...

Evan

Are you on a CG5 goto mount and using a tripod?

You can get a electronic compass from Jaycar for < $30
In Sydney True South / Celestial South is 13 degrees left (East) of Magnetic South.

Mark a line True North / South line on the ground.

Circle where your tripod legs should be with permanent marker or surveyor pegs.

Use Utilities -> Polar Align -> Display Align to see how well your polar alignment is
Use List -> Constellations -> Sigma Octans -> Polar Australias to see where Polar South should be
Use Utilities -> Polar Align -> Do Polar Align to move where your polar alignment is then manually slew it using the mount screws (not the mount to pointing direction buttons on the hand controller) back to Polar Australias

then do another 3 star alignment
