Found my mistake

Great ....now I know why the Go To thought Jupiter was over near Vega... I added the local mag variation of 10 degrees to 180. So I had much trouble slewing last night. Found my mistake by doing a search here. I'm impressed with my C8 after 2 nights of powering on, though dew is a problem I will have to address. Now back to the Due South problem a lot of us are having problems with. Has anybody designed a simple sort of mount that fits over the telescope head that will hold a compass so an accurate reading can be taken. Sounds a lot easier than searching for a faint star "somewhere down there".Can someone let me know if I am on the wrong approach with this. I'm findind it fun to work through this telescope one step at a time.
