It is very difficult to get anything really with a DSLR. One of the finest examples of photographing this object i found over on Astrobin by the very talented Equinoxx. This animation showcases different filter blends in different combinations. You will note when its just RGB (visible colour), the nebula disappears completely! amazing stuff.
