Very sorry to hear this Ian. Whether it's a dog, cat, goldfish, or that Magpie that flogs your dinner from the kitchen window, they're all special if you give them your attention.
We've had our current cat for 10 years. He was already 5 when he wandered in off the street and planted his flag. Each week he gets a little slower, and we dread the same trip that you described.
Our family has had cats since before I was born (nearly 40 now). As it turned out, my Dad was very weak for them, and couldn't bring himself to do it. Since I was 8, it's been my role to give them their last cuddle as they go to sleep. Our previous family members tapped out at 13, 15, 17, 19, and 17 - my whole life, as mentioned.
It's great to see an animal has been treated as a proper family member by you and yours. I live in a lousy neighbourhood, where dogs are often no more than a security device, or a ute accessory.
I hope you feel better as soon as is naturally possible.
