It was probably at night time Col, when MW reception is a lot better as the ionosphere D layer disappears. The signal path at night bounces off the E or F layer which is a lot higher and allows long distance reception.
My aerial went from my 1st story bedroom window to a tree about 30 metres away plus I had a good Earth connection attached to a copper water pipe.
