I calibrate I bit differently. I choose a star close to 0 deg Dec and near the meridian before my imaging session. This also gives me a chance to see if my polar alignment is still good.

I image all over the night sky from zenith to near the SGP and guiding is always spot on.
I have just rearranged my setup and I can easily guide for 10min to 15min, 20 min sometimes work. On my Heq5 pro belt mod.

I do use Sequence Generator Pro which connects to PHD2 and chooses a star and guides automatically.

Just my quick input on PHD2 guiding.
