A couple of things that will help greatly - first, go here:
https://asv.org.au/ The Astronomical Society of Victoria have all sorts of get togethers and observing nights and plenty of knowledgeable folk to kick start your journey.
Second is to download a planetarium app like Sky Safari to your phone/ipad. That will help you find out what's what in the night sky and what to point your scope at.
