Hi Brian.
As far as balance is concerned ... I spent a lot of time with a prototype I made from wood to check all of this .. no problem.. it's all in the positioning on the tripod and size / overhangs etc. After several months of trials and mods I then remade from solid alloy , made up bearings for the AZ fine adjust etc etc.
I made my first one which I still have, and use, some 5 years back and I can assure you it has never toppled over.
