No I had not tried the Canon software. So I tried it and it certainly opens the CR2 file in colour. But as far as I can see it only allows save as cr2 format. Shotwell allows a range of formats.
I am a native Linux user and venture into Windows (dual boot) for astro purposes.
So a quick look in Linux to see if picrure quality is OK before going to Windows is most appealing.
