I agree there is a strong resemblance to the dark tower region of Scorpio.
No I don't use the star removal technique... I use the iterative Sidonio blending algorithm, developed over years and years of careful experimentation

. I make various versions that emphasise the things I want in each then blend them using Lighten, Soft light, Hard light, Normal and Luminance modes in PS, in several layers in different ways...ie. add herbs and spices until it tastes right
