but never managed to get any other program to work.

Edit - I did manage did stack some pics in the end using Photoshop
but as it was only a telephoto on a DSLR it's no where near as good as yours.

Dss is no good for lunar/planetary.
I used Registax and 15 images.
I have failed in Registax before, but this time I had the mount on Lunar tracking, which meant the images were pretty close to the same place in the frame and I guess that helped with stacking.
I then used photoshop to get more stars out.
