I haven't actually, I should try them. The best method I found for these was to adjust the image reasonably well, then duplicate, gaussian blur, tweek the gradients for trees etc (fill inthe gaps), remove about 20% brightness then subtract that from the original image. I found that was extremely effective.

ABE is free Command prompt program and there is a little front end program that works really well. It does all of that fiddlely stuff in a few seconds.
