Any infection that gets into the deep tissues of the hand is really bad news, this includes palm puncture wounds and finger thumb tips. Very painful and often need cleaning out manually to evacuate the pus and make sure there is no tendon damage.
Be wary of animal bites on hands. I often treat them aggressively initially with 24 hrs IV antibiotics.
