I was troubleshooting step by step. I could see clearly without the eyepiece but not with it, so I knew there was something up with it. I cleaned the outer lenses, but it was still obscure, so I dismantled it and saw the lens inside and I tried turning it around just as a process of elimination. Bingo! I saw my target.
