Many moons ago I ran a website for a Model Railway Club. It became quite popular with a healthy blog forum. My method of beating the spammers was to place rules and a rating for all users. When a new login/ profile appeared any posts were "held" until myself or another moderator has viewed the post, if it was all good we would release the comment to the forum. If there were 5 good comments we would give full access ongoing. If the post was crappy spam we would delete the unreleased post and block the IP.
It was a fair bit of work and of course the forum had some lag for new users however it seemed to work well.
Not sure if that would take too much time for a site of this size.

BTW a big shout out to the IIS moderators, you do a great job to keep this site neat and tidy, respectful and on point.
