Boozle... spam was originally (still is) "spiced ham in a can" from before WWII. A key point was it did not require refrigeration. During the war the U.K. was desperately short of meat and Spam was a usedul solution as it could be easily shipped from the US, lasted for ages and minimal wastage apart from the can.
There were many recipes using spam in creative ways and I'm old enough to remember my mum using it occasionally. I've even seen it feature in one course of a degustation menu in a restaurant celebrating the 75th anniversary of VE Day.
It's still a staple for real backpackers (not hipsters) yachties and a few picnics - if you like it.
