All my cameras are unmodded. However all image are reprocessed to show up emission neb as are most photos published on this forum.
Canon sell a 50mm f1.8 that many refer to as the nifty fifty. It is very cheap ~ A$115 and optically excellent as are most 50mm primes. It is the easiest lens to design.
I have never modded any camera. I use them more for terrestrial photography than astro and I teach photography courses at a photography art centre. I need to have cameras with a normal colour balance when doing demos. I demo with live view straight to a big screen monitor in the teaching room.
I have never owned an *ist D. I saw some half decent m31 images taken with it but I don't think it had Ha sensitivity. My K10D certainly didn't. But you may as well try your *ist D and see.
My K5 has some red sensitivity and the K1 seems reasonable. There are some colour shifts eg. purple stars at high ISO's. Noise is well controlled and the darks are incredible.
In fact I have low light noise reduction turned off and I processed the image quickly and didn't apply any darks to the posted image.
