Lewis,
Canberra has made a special welcome just for you.

When I came to this place in the late 70's I experienced a similar welcome.

One day the fog did not lift until about 2 in the afternoon. The next day the water pipes were frozen until about 3 in the afternoon. I wondered "what have I done?"

Some mentioned extremes. I think this qualifies - one Christmas day I flew to Perth, it was snowing here and it was > +40 on the tarmac in Perth. What a country !

You get use to the night temperatures (eventually - been here about 35 years give or take). I have been outside at 2AM in June with a t-shirt and shorts on and my concession to the cold was a pair of slippers. You just notice the unimportant when the sky is so great. My wife recons she will get up one morning and find me frozen to death with my eye still at the eyepiece.
