Many collectors like to do it as a record of the evolution of an item over the years. To others it is about being able to show off to their acquaintances.
Some older collectors remember a time when they had nothing and thus are unable to part with things. Yet others link the collection to a 'quieter, gentler' time in their lives.... (childhood)

I did an edit excluding collecting astronomy gear which of course is reasonable and most desirable.
