I guess the takeaway is that we should be prepared and cautious--take lots of photos of your gear, get them engraved, put stickers etc. to personalise them. Get them insured etc.

I manage the equipment for one of the clubs. Three (3!!!) dobs went missing before I took over. I managed to recover one of them. We don't know if they were stolen or just forgotten in someone's cupboard. So we engraved every single thing with a serial number (if they didn't have one) and labelled all of them. Things often get misplaced because they can get mixed up in people's personal gear so this also helps.

I know all Meade LX90s have an inspection certificate sticker which have numbers, the person who inspected it, and when it was done. They're unique to each batch done on a certain date. It might help identify the scope. Also an idea of when and where the scope was bought/manufactured can help identify it as Meade does make revisions of the LX90s throughout the years.
