Thanks Dunk. I find having the y: scale at that setting it shows what I need to see. I did set it to 2" once and found if one of the lines went a bit far I had to dial it back to 8" to see it was recovering and not to panic. The guide scope is 400mm (Orion bog standard ST80) I am imaging at 714mm with this setup and a focal ratio of f7. I have read that you should try to match the guide fl to the imaging fl, but have not really understood why?
