Nathan... I do agree with you on some points, (but mostly not)
However, with all due respect, you are (for the most part) being inflammatory and spectacularly obtuse.
As a sound tech, I'll submit this hard won gem of wisdom.... I would hope the allegory is not lost on you...
Irrespective of the artistic merit of the music being fed to your desk, the only person who leaves the gig thinking that the performance was enhanced by virtue of driving the needles above +0db, is the guy doing it.
When you push it to obvious distortion, pull it back 3db (at a minimum) And listen to the FOH when they point it out.
