After 55 years...

Depends what you're doing. Some imaging types have just one scope and don't even look visually through it.

But for a visual observer three is probably nirvana:

One scope for high magnification lunar & planetary - long focal length eg mak or SCT;

One small scope for grab&go, kids, friends and outreach events;

One scope for deep sky where aperture counts, provided you're prepared to go to a dark site to use it...
