They tell us the message they want to convey, not necessarily the facts. They tell us those parts of the news that they want to use to manipulate our conceptions, to help guide us in the direction they/their editors and ultimately their paying stakeholders want. There is always some perception of balance: one side V the other, Labor V Liberal, Eco V Industrialist, Male V Female, Religion X V Religion Y. How many bad news stories can one tell: in-a-row? Sometimes it seems there's no limit. I wouldn't bother supporting other than your own personal view- their managed puppet show of the news is just that.

Yep. Someone says something nasty on a train -> 2 minute segment about how horrible it all is, with mobile phone video and social commentary.
Someone gets stabbed and robbed -> brief mention.
