There's no doubt that if you are running a reducing flame inside the furnace, then you can't do this inside! Lots of ventilation i.e. outside is the go.
Zinc fume are not the worst. Apparently there are a lot nastier fumes when you graduate to brasses and bronzes due to the required fluxes involved.
