It's a tough question to answer not knowing the person who it's for.

There's cheap and there's cheap. If it's a young person who may not commit to learning then probably look at the lower end of cheap, if they can already play a bit then look at the higher end of cheap.

Then it really helps to know what style of music they're likely to want to play........Fender styled guitars usually have single coil pickups whereas Gibson/Epiphone style have humbuckers and this makes a considerable difference to the amplified sound/tone, then to confuse things even further, if heavy metal is their thing then they may imagine themselves playing a pointy guitar and not one of the more "traditional" styles.

ChrisV's suggestion of Musos Corner in N'cle should be heeded, they keep a good range and the staff are virtually all musos themselves, the fact that I've been good friends with the owner for over four decades and bought a crap load of gear from there is incidental. The fact that more than once over the years they've been voted best music retailer in Aust., should give you an idea.

Give us more info about the potential recipient and you'll probably get a better guide from us.
BTW......Chris, does the name Turtlerock mean anything to you?
