The clutch knobs can seize if the grub screw is too tight and grabs the aluminium shaft. With the covers removed you can see a grub screw which fits into the recess near the threaded section pictured. The grub screw simply stops the knob from unscrewing all the way and falling off.
You can see a scape mark on the shaft where the grub screw was rubbing from being too tight.
