I think you might find that there are two grub screws, and to get the black knob off you have to remove the large and reducer knobs from the other end and then the whole shaft will slide out exposing the other grub screw.......
It has been a long time since I dismantled one and I am getting older by the minute so my memory could also be playing tricks on me....
