Alex.. I think it might be useful to draw the distinction between the popular UFO phenomena (if there actually is such a thing) and the possibility of (space fairing) alien life.
The subject naturally appeals to a certain demographic of people and is championed by charlatans of the ilk of David Icke, Alex Jones, et al)... That's one side of the coin.
There are however, a number of people who have held positions requiring a high degree of credibility that claim that there is some element of truth to the assertion.
Edgar Mitchell, Apollo 14 lunar module pilot is one of them
as is Paul Hellyer, former Canadian minister for defence.
There are also quite a few retired people who held high positions in the military and intelligence communities that have come forward as well.
(search for the disclosure project)
That's not to say that there is any substance to it.
What can be said is that the following statement: 'no-one of any public standing has claimed that UFO's are real' is actually false.
One statement I can confidently make which is undeniably true is that governments and the mainstream media routinely deceive the general population as a matter of course.... so, irrespective of where the truth of the matter lies, you ain't going to hear it from the lips of Obama on CNN.
It's also a truism that the act of posing questions (or assertions) which become inconvenient wrt) the establishment (and it's narrative) carries with it the risk of being stigmatised with the (deliberately) weaponised term: 'conspiracy theorist' (or worse)
I personally have never seen a little green man (outside of a St Pat's day celebration) ... but if I had, do you think I would actually admit to it on this forum?
Would you?
There is also a logical fallacy pertaining to the subject that I am inclined to point out in the form of an allegory:
I used to live near an air base, I also have two immediate relatives who worked for the RAAF, and I built countless model airplanes as a kid) .. Yet I, nor anyone else I know, has ever seen a Russian, Sukhoi T-50, fighter jet. Does this mean that claims of the T50's existence are false?
As for UFO's... personally, I have no idea either way.
