Yes, that's what I meant. That can help if it's a permissions/privileges problem. Another random thought is to bring up Maxim manually before you try to run the blink program.
Unfortunately, my knowledge of the internals of Windows is pretty superficial. I learned Comp Sci in the days when we still used real operating systems
