The position of the Milky Way at the time is a big factor in these "Milky Waybow" type images without too much distortion. For me, when the central bulge of the MW is in the west about 45 degrees above the horizon, it is in the ideal position to capture it without too much distortion. If the bulge is too high in the sky it is difficult to get the band without distortion. I used to do them with the MW bulge rising in the east, but the area around Crux is really high and distorted too much.
I primarily shoot with my 24mm these days because it is a lot sharper than my 14mm.
