As an interim measure, they could always set up booths like they do now, but each one has a dedicated flatscreen in it.
You sign off at a desk on entry as per now and after that, its all electronic.
That way you keep the sausage sizzles, and last minute gate cronies, and the cost of the tablets etc would be more than offset by not needing to print, distribute, return and count paper ballots.
Also, would put Antony Green and his ilk out of jobs, as the count would be live.
Re true online voting, there was an interesting interview in the midday news, where the person running the senate count was saying how it was currently done, and the problems encountered.
First preference counts are done manually and then the rest of the ballot is scanned and done by computer ( which i didnt know ).
She constantly referred to how a manual cross check was still required, both on data entry and result tallies, as there are human errors involved, and more pertinently, she knew that software wasnt perfect and there could always be bugs in how different datasets could be processed.
At least one person seems to understand some of the realities.
