Raspberry Pi was just an example how CPU speed crippled the external HD speeds. Overclocking the CPU had a direct relation to the file copy speeds.

ADSL modems likely have even slower CPUs and this may be the limitation. It certainly was with mine, I could watch the CPU load go to maximum when accessing the HD. For comparison a (cheap) $200 NAS (Synology DS216j) has dual-core 1GHz CPU.

Bojan, what speed do you actually get when copying from/to the HD connected to your ADSL modem? If it is about 10MB/s then the limitation is the 100Mb network port.
