I take the view that if someone is courteous enough to respond to a thread I started, a response or thanks is the courteous thing to do in return - and I do it on this and every other forum I visit, always replying to every response made directly to me on a thread I started. That doesn't often happen with other thread starters, and one's enthusiasm wanes after continually responding to questions for no little apparent reason in terms of feedback.
Is it really a genuine "community" when people don't act as they would in a face-to-face community?

Very true Renato.
It's considered common courtesy to acknowledge and respond to someone that tries to answer and help out.
Sadly though, this is not always the case.
