Hmm, another cat lover.

They are desexed, they will not be kept inside for ever, we've had cats for years and other than the occasional sparrow or starling no native birds have been harmed during their various ( 7 ) lives with us. Or animals either.

On the other hand our last cat, Koko killed his last rat only a week before we had to have him put down at age 15. He lined up 3 in a row one morning for me to inspect. On my laptop case ! His life kill on rats would be well into the several hundreds, his bird kill, about 2. Neither were natives.

Did you know rats kill a lot more native birds than cats do ? They get into the nests and destroy the eggs before they even hatch. Those and stoats, weasels, ferrets. Dogs kill kiwis, and sheep, and attack children too. Shall we keep all dogs inside ?

There is a risk in everything and it's up to good owners to manage their pets as well as they can. We like to think we do our best to protect both our pets and our environment.
