Gel batteries generally last a bit longer than car batteries when used for
this type of application, allow say 30% longer. A 38a/h gel at $219 gives
about 50-55% of the capacity of the car battery that I mentioned for well
over double the price. Allowing for the longer life of the gel battery, that still makes the gel battery around three times less value for money. Add to that that if doing a fair bit of slewing of the mount, and running the dew heater, the gel battery would barely last for a long session.
People always over think this power supply issue. I have been using car batteries for almost 40 years, and never had a problem.
