Optical pass filters or no filters?

I want to get peoples opinions on Low Optical Pass Filters. Are they needed for astrophography?. I did read that Nikon had a "Star Eater" problem with some filters, Is this feature not being on a dslr at all going to affect this at all?

The model in question is a Nikon D3300, the reason I am considering this camera is it was rated one of the top ten for astro here and it is only around $100 more than the Canon 1200D (Rebel T5) that I was going to get. With double the ISO and supposedly 40+% better battery life, this is the hinging factor, If I need the low pass filter it will be the Canon, if not it will be the Nikon.
