Also, use your lowest power eyepiece when initially finding objects. I am not sure what eyepieces that you have, but the higher number (For example 20mm or 25mm) gives the lowest power.
I have a 32mm that I always go to first for finding objects. I never thought about taking it out during the day to line up the red dot, good idea when I get new batteries I'll give it a shot.
