Exploding meteor or space junk?
HI all,
last night as I was sitting in the observatory taking photos of the sky looking for comets because well, that's what you do for New Year's Eve, I caught this interesting little event. The attached pics are crops of the larger pictures the details of which are as follows:
Celestron 11 inch with Hyperstar and Nikon D7000, 20 S exposure @ ISO 6400.
The picture with the event is a 12 x 8 arc min crop with North at top taken at 2015 12 31.458 UT.
The area is in Hydrus and the approximate coords are: 3:37:00, -68:47:00.
It seems that I have captured either an exploding meteor as evidenced by the apparent plumes at each side of the main event, or a piece of space junk doing the same as it enters. The interesting gradation of the tail in discrete sections is very un-meteor - like.
Any suggestions?
Richard
