A spot that may be worth checking is on Lady Wakehurst Drive at Otford at the southern end of the Royal National Park. There are a couple of spots where you can park off the side of the road that afford a clear view over the ocean from N.E. to Sth. and at almost 200 metres above sea level. The co-ordinates are :- 34.12.41 south and 150.00.37 east if you want to check it out via GoogleEarth. Not really dark but you should be able to see the Carina / Puppis section of the Milky Way.
