This would be funny if it wasn’t a reality. Definitely talk to them. But have a backup plan. If there’s room for a tree, buy the seedling now and plant it.
2 years ago I had an issue with a neighbour who put up a motion detector light 1m from my fence line. It turned on whenever I went out my back door at night, and lit the area up. She wouldn’t do anything when I spoke to her, and I had to go to the Department of Justice Mediation Centre to get her to take it down. 6 months later she put it back in a slightly different position. Soon after the house got sold to a property investor, and the current tenants leave the light off, but it is still there.
So get planting. You never know what your neighbour will do.
