Bob,

That really looks like a combination broadband modem, Router, and 4 port switch to me. Post a picture of the model / part number if you can,

As a hint always try and plug devices into the same yellow ports 1 -> 4 (not the red uplink port next to the round black broadband cable).

You open a command prompt by click the home Start icon, selecting under all programs that search box, and typing cmd. this will open a DOS like shell, then you type
ipconfig /all

or

ipconfig /all > c:/networkstats.txt

which will create the file networkstats.txt as a text file.

then type exit to close the DOS command shell.
