With the prices of good second hand CCD's - mono or OSC - going regularly for under $1500, it does seem very counter-intuitive.
I got my latest CCD for $1100 with post (an SBIG ST-8300 - no slouch of a chip).
If you just HAVE to do it, they are the best option around - heard very good reviews.
