Definitely darker moonless skies help a lot.

To Find Eta Carina:
Look at the Southern Cross (naked eye)
Draw a line from Beta Crux through Epsilon Crux, then almost three and a half times that span again.
you will see a brighter patch of nebulosity within the milky way.
That is it.
