Ah, that's interesting. I was using the galaxy as a white reference, but with structure detection enabled. I was also using a preview for the background reference.
I noticed a subtle (to my eye anyway) gradient when viewing with STF and I extracted that using DBE... interestingly enough the colour balance was pretty damn good after that without even running colour calibration. Didn't expect that...
